From her teenage years as a red-skirted figure skater to her time as a PR officer and teacher before meeting France's future president, a book out last Wednesday attempts to decode the popularity of France's first lady.

Childhood friends recount Macron's early years as the youngest of six children in the northern French town of Amiens, recalling a cossetted and vivacious teenager, a member of the city's figure skating team for three years starting in 1967.
"Being the last of a large family, she benefited from a large degree of freedom," a friend recalled.
Another remembered that "for good marks, she once got an entire jewellery set in silver."

Mrs Macron has previously said the couple fell in love when Emmanuel was 15 - the age of consent in France - but their affair still scandalised Amiens.

Brun quotes a friend of Mrs Macron who explains that the period is a 'wound' in her life which she does not enjoy speaking about.
'But she has sometimes told me she lost all her friends,' the acquaintance went on.
'Friends with whom she went on holiday changed overnight and no longer wanted to speak to her.'

Their affair ended Mrs Macron's marriage to Andrew-Louis Auziere, now 66 - though she did not get divorced until 2006 - and led to Mr Macron being removed from the school and sent to Paris.

Auziere had a 'violent reaction' when he heard she was having an affair, the biography claims.

'To be replaced by a schoolmate of his daughter, by an adolescent whom he had often received at his home? That's a difficult wound to heal.'

The daughter described him as a kind of “UFO” who “knows everything about everything” and spent more time talking to teachers than pupils. The two clicked immediately and he would come around aged 15 with bunches of flowers to the French and drama teacher’s house.

Appalled locals even denounced the relationship in anonymous letters to her parents while others spat on their door.

An acquaintance of Mrs Macron is quoted by Ms Brun as saying: “She is very tight-lipped about this topic. It is a wound she won’t talk about directly.

Mr Macron’s parents, who are both doctors, were also treated “like they had the plague” in Amiens, it adds. Mr Macron was sent to Paris to complete his education far from the local scandal.

Macron left Amiens to finish his schooling in Paris, vowing to marry his former teacher. 'At the age of 17, Emmanuel said to me, 'Whatever you do, I will marry you!'.
